Gift from Granny...

Don't be jealous, but I have the world's best Granny! 
The other day I went to my mailbox to find a package from her.  In it there were a bunch of these amazing hand stamped charms. My Granny has a friend, who owns DesignIt that makes them, along with several other styles of jewlery.  Her work is beautiful, but these little charms imprinted with Alana's motto, "Brave", touch my heart.  
 The little silver one goes on Alana's medical alert bracelet, the copper with the heart is for Miss Jen ( our baby sitter who is also type 1) and then there are 4 more for my other daughters, my husband and myself.
 Here is Miss Jen as she opened up the little envelope with a message from my Granny and the charm (thought she was going to cry).  It was so unexpected, but Gran wanted to let her know how much she means to our family.  Jen has been a great support for us.  She's a great baby sitter and an even better friend.
I think she likes it!!!

Thank you Granny for the sweet gift.  We will treasure them forever.

Friday, March 23, 2012   I received a phone call from my oldest daughter Alana's Kindergarten teacher. Mrs Munos was concerned that Alana wasn't acting her bubbly self.  I had noticed that she seemed to have been sleeping a lot and wrote it off to the time change and just getting back from spring break. But now I had a little flag from her teacher.  I began to wonder if there was something wrong with her.  My first thought was depression.  So I sent her out on a Daddy Daughter date with my husband to see if it would boost her spirits. No such luck.  I've never heard of a child being so glum at the Kemah Boardwalk. But in fact, she hardly cracked a smile. Over the weekend Alana seemed to get worse.  She slept for a good part of church on my lap and I really began to worry.  Alana was eating like a teenage boy, drinking a ton of water and using the restroom several times an hour.  My husband, Chris, even thought she might have mono. ...

Hugs Jugs

We D-Mommas are always looking for low carb options for our kids.  While at Kroger yesterday, I felt compelled to check the carb counts on Little Hug Fruit Barrels.   I was very surprised to find that one Hug was only 2 grams of carbs and twenty count box is only $3! I was so excited that I bought two boxes.   When it came time to pick the girls up from school, the excitement was still flowing through my veins.  So I packed a few in my purse to give the girls in the car on the way home.   Results of the taste test were awesome.  Alana loves them.  Not to mention that they made her feel more like a normal kids.  Normal is great in my book.   I'm trilled that I no longer have to by different drinks for all the girls.  The price, taste and nutritional facts make Hugs a winner in our home.

All in the Family?

 This is one of the saddest posts I've had to write in some time... Two weeks ago I got a phone call from my brother in law, Brad.  He started the conversation with a little laugh and "I think your Alana has rubbed off on Reed" I was perplexed.  Oh no.  What did Alana do now?   "It looks like Reed is a type 1 diabetic too" I was floored.  I had just gone to Alana's school to give a talk on T1D, now we have another child in my husband's family who is insulin dependent. (My pancreas prop) Reed and Alana were born a year and two days apart. Reed had to go to the hospital in DKA on his tenth birthday.  It's the worst birthday present EVER!!! I felt hopeless and all I wanted to drop everything and fly out to Utah to help out.  But Alana was turning nine the next day and there was just no way I could make it happen.  So we scheduled to skype that night.
